Design a 4X4 Grid

Week: 01

Level: Undergraduate

Introduction to Adobe Illustrator

As Motion Designers, we often have to create assets in design based software like Illustrator, Photoshop or Flash, which we then import into After Effects to animate. In this first session we explore the basics of Illustrator, a very powerful vector based software used in design and motion.

Exercise

  • Create a Colour Palette of 5 colours
  • Create a 4X4 Grid in Illustrator (2000px X 2000px)
  • Fill each Square on the grid with 1 of the 5 colours in the palette.
  • Using the Pen and Shape Tools, create simple geometric patterns on 6 of the 16 squares in the grid.
  • You can use Stroke as well as Fill, but maintain only 1 Stroke width in the composition.
  • Each of the Squares should be placed on their own Layers uniquely labelled A1, A2, A3, A4, B1... D4.
  • Finalize the Composition!

Prepare file for AE

When we are content with the Design and Composition of the Grid, we need to make sure that our file is setup in a way that we can easily access each of the individual layers in AE.
