One Big Hapa Family

Animation Commission | 2009

In One Big Hapa Family, Jeff Chiba Stearns explores his Japanese-Canadian heritage as he interviews several of his relatives about how they perceive their cultural identity today.

I was commissioned to animate 90 seconds for the feature docu 'One Big Hapa Family' by Jeff Chiba Stearns (Yellow Sticky Notes). Jeff explores his Japanese-Canadian heritage in the film as he interviews several of his relatives about how they perceive their cultural identity today. Apart from live action interviews and timelapse photography, Jeff contacted several animators across Canada to work on different sections of the film, as well as animating a few sections of the film himself in his signature style. Last I checked there were at least 5 other animation styles in the film :) Lip-'masterful'-sync of the poem by Ceci Velasco Director: Jeff Chiba Stearns Meditating Bunny Studios Producer: Ruth Vincent
